2015

International Workshop on Applications in Information Technology, Oct 8-10

The International Workshop on Applications in Information Technology (IWAIT-2015) was organized in Aizu-Wakamatsu as a cooperation project of the University of Aizu, Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, and St. Petersburg State Univeristy. Alexander Baratynskiy presented the paper "Traveler Guide Assistant: Introducing an Application for an OpenStreetMap Based Travel Itinerary Construction". Within the framework of the workshop, St. Petersburg video-conference session was organized where the authors from our partner universities was able to present their research works. In particular, our students Boris Skripal, Elena Dmitrieva, Anton Kiselev and Andrei Eleshevich presented their papers. Full program of St. Petersburg session is available here. The papers "Visualization of Execution Paths for Concurrent Programs" by Andrei Eleshevich and Marat Akhin, and "Design of Automatic Speech Emotion Recognition System" by Elena Dmitrieva and Kirill Nikitin representing the department of Computer Systems and Software Engineering were awarded as conference best papers by decision of the IWAIT-2015 program committee.

Federated Conference on Computer Science and Information Systems FedCSIS 2015, Lodz, Sep 13-16

Evgeny Pyshkin contributed to the conference as a session chair (Advanced Semantic Information Retrieval). Andrey Kuznetsov presented the research paper "Approach to Building a Web-based Expert System Interface and Its Application for Software Provisioning in Clouds".

Maxim Mozgovoy Lectures at St. Petersburg Polytechnic University

While visiting St. Petersburg Polytechnic University Maxim Mozghovoy was invited to give lectures for under-graduate school students of the Dept. of Computer Systems and Software Engineering. The lectures covered such topics as current trends of programming language design with particular attention paid to C++ language, object-oriented programming foundations, as well as a series of seminars on scientific writing.

Research Seminar with Vitaly Klyuev

Within the framework of his visit to St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, Prof. Vitaly Klyuev joined the research seminar on state-of-the-art problems in the domain of information retrieval. During the seminar there were also brief presentation of Evgeny Pyshkin who talked about his lecture visit to Nanjing University of Aeronuatics and Astronautics (China). Alexander Baratynskiy presented his work on travel itinerary construction based on OpenStreetMap which was recently accepted for in person presentation at the international workshop IWAIT-2015.

Inaugral WC2 Symposium, London, Cite University Cass Business School, Aug 10-14

Within the framework of WC2 academic program the inaugural WC2 Symposium was organized and hosted by City University London from Monday 10th to Friday 14th August. The five-day educational programme brought together more than 130 academic staff and postgraduate students from across the network, including professors and students from St. Petersburg Polytechnic University. The attendees discussed the challenges faced by universities located in major world cities.

Research Seminar "Human-Centric Computing and Software Engineering" with Bertrand Meyer

On June 15 we organized a joint research seminar of the Institute of Computer Science and Technology with participation of representatives of the research groups "Software Testing and Programming Technology" (managed by Prof. Vsevolod Kotlyarov), "Information Retrieval and Software" (managed by Ass. Prof. Evgeny Pyshkin), and Digitek Labs (managed by Ass. Prof. Vladimir Itsykson). Prof. Bertrand Meyer was invited to join the seminar within the framwork of his lecture visit to St. Petersburg Polytechnic University.

Andrey Kuznersov takled on the recent research "An Approach for Building a Web-Based Expert System Interface and Its Application for Software Provisioning in Clouds". Our BSc graduating students Alexander Baratynskiy and Boris Skripal presented their work "Travellers Guides for Guides: A Practical Approach".

Our colleagues presented their research on Mining Software Repositories: Using Humans to Better Software (Marat Akhin) and on Garanteeing Software Quality on the Base of Formal Methods Usage (Pavel Drobintsev).

Bertrand Meyer's Guest Lecture at St. Petersburg Polytechnic University

On June 15 we organized a guest lecture of Prof. Bertrand Meyer "Computing: Art, Magic, Science. Tools and MOOCs for Teaching Programming". In the past three years Prof. Meyer was involved to create several MOOCs on the basis of that experience, exploring many new pedagogical directions, and developing powerful new tools for learning programming (see http://codeboard.io) In his talk at St. Petersburg Polytechnic University Prof. Meyer described these results and the excitement and challenges of using new technologies to support teaching concepts of programming and software engineering.

Research Seminar "Self-Referencial Enterprise Systems" with Ulrich Franck

On May 18 Prof. Ulrich Frank from the University Duisburg-Essen was invited to present a software engineering seminar on multilevel modeling as a foundation concept for a new paradigm of developing, using and maintaining enterprise software systems.

Ulm University of Applied Science Visit to St. Petersburg Polytechnic University

On May 12-13 a group of students and professors from Ulm University of Applied Science (Hochschule Ulm) visited the Insitute of Computing and Control. After visiting the institute labs, joint Russian-German teams participated in the RoboCode programming competition.

International Workshop on Applications in Information Technology is announced

The seminar will be organized in the University of Aizu on Oct 8-10, 2015 as a cooperation project of St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, St. Petersburg State University and the University of Aizu. The 2015 International Workshop on Applications in Information Technology invites student papers presenting new advances and research results in the fields of information technology applications.

St. Petersburg Polytechnic University Visit to the University of Aizu, Aizu-Wakamatsu, Apr 2-4

On Apr 2-4, 2015, Prof. Mikhail Okrepilov, Director of the Institute of Computing and Control, and Dr. Evgeny Pyshkin visited the University of Aizu and signed a Memorandum of Collaboration for academic and research partnership programs. Within the framework of this visit Evgeny Pyshkin coordinated the joint seminar where the completed and future projects of the joint research group on Information Retrieval and Software were discussed.

10th World Cities World Class University Network Meeting, Tokyo, Mar 30 - Apr 1

The 10th WC2 University Network Meeting hosted by Meiji University took place between 30th March to 2nd April 2014 in Tokyo. Within the framework of the Meiji University Showсase Evgeny Pyshkin presented the research work on Unique Constructions of Japanese Buddhist Architecture in Aizu.

Andrey Kuznetsov presented the research work "Understanding Software Provisioning: An Ontological View" done in co-authorship with Evgeny Pyshkin and Vitaly Klyuev.

XIII International Conference on Computer-Assisted Education, Zurich, Jan 13-14

zurich At the conference focused on discussing experiences and research results about all aspects of computer assisted education Evgeny Pyshkin presented the paper "Models and Metamodels for Computer-Assisted Natural Language Grammar Learning". This research is an outcome of joint work we did together with Maxim Mozgovoy and Vladislav Volkov. The authors analyzed a virtual language lab concept and propose visual models for computer-assisted grammar learning environments.

The Eastern Europe-Luxembourg Workshop on Cloud Computing, Communications, Security and Services (CLOUDCOMS), Luxembourg, Oct 8-10

luxembourg The workshop was organized in conjunction with the 3rd IEEE International Conference on Cloud Networking. Evgeny Pyshkin presented the joint work with Andrey Kuznetsov on provisioning CLI applications in computing clouds. The project is focused on current problems of using clouds by researchers working in the domain of music information retrieval algorithms development and evaluation.

warsaw Evgeny Pyshkin presented the research work "Learning history with timelines: use cases, requirements and design". In this work we examine problems that historians and learners face when they deal with chronologically ordered historical information.

16th IEEE International Conference on High Performance Computing and Communications (HPCC-2014), Paris, France, Aug 20-22

hpcc-cd On August 21, 2014 Andrey Kuznetsov presented the research work "A Provisioning Service for Automatic Command Line Applications Deployment in Computing Clouds" focused on executing scientific algorithms (such as algorithms from the music information retrieval domain) by enabling the sharing of algorithm implementations, the reproducibility of results, and an easy access to non-experts of distributed environments.

Research seminar on computer-assisted language learning

hpcc-cd On August 12, 2014 a research seminar was held at the department of computer systems and software engineering. The main topic of the seminar is one of current approaches to language education based on the idea of doing experiments in a manner similar to the natural and technical science education.

Our guest Prof. Maxim Mozgovoy from the University of Aizu talked about developing a computer-assisted language learning tools. He presented WordBricks, a virtual language playground inspired by Scratch programming environment and adressing number of important problems of grammar learning and teaching.

Evgeny Pyshkin talked about the joint work focused on models for computer-assisted natural language grammar learning. We consider to present results of this joint research within the scope of a relevant scientific conference.

itme-venue On July, 7, 2014 Diego Fernando Cabezas Tapia presented the joint paper (in cooperation with the research group in Embedded Intelligent Control Systems) "Assisted lung ventilation control system as a human centered application: The project and its educational impact on the course of embedded systems".

Ivan Khozyainov successfully defended his master degree thesis "A method of sentiment classification by using reinforcement learning for information retrieval systems" (supervised by E. Pyshkin).
